The artists’ books gallery provides a portal into the artists’ books in the Arts and Special Collections Research Center at the Baylor University Libraries. Selective images of each work demonstrate the wide variety of artistic expressions and diversity of materials and techniques in this collection, combined with rich information about each work. As this type of artwork may be new to many viewers, it’s helpful to define such materials as the works of artists that use the form or concept of the book as their medium of expression. One of the things that makes artists’ books stand apart from many visual art forms is that here the artist has intended for the audience to interact directly and haptically – to handle the objects in an intimate and tactile manner – and to be completely in control of the experience, much like a reader would interact with a traditional book, making decisions about how to interact. While the digital gallery cannot provide this fullest experience, it offers a window through which to make initial explorations of the collection. To learn more about artists’ books, visit our guide to artists’ books and book arts. To experience artists’ books in-person, please schedule a visit with the Arts and Special Collections Research Center.
Baylor University’s Artists’ Book Collection includes approximately 2,000 works by artists from all around the world and representing many different techniques, materials, and artistic mediums. The collection began in 2007 with the acquisition of works by book artist Maddy Rosenberg and has since grown to a nationally recognized collection of limited-edition and artists’ books in areas of fine press, poetry, letterpress, photography, literature, handmade papers, textiles, sculpture, and many more expressions of art.
