what must speak to us. And we begin the story in fellowship with angels. There was a man, the narrative reads, named Manoah, who lived in the valley of Sorek. He was married. We do not know his wife's name. It is nowhere mentioned. We know very little about Manoah and his wife. There are a few sentences in the writings of the great

Hebrew historian Josephus which say that Manoah was a man of great virtue and had a great wife, a woman of great beauty. But other than that, we know nothing of them. And on one occasion, Manoah's wife is apart and in meditation, evidently, and there she is approached by an angel of God. And the angel tells her that she will conceive by

Manoah a son, and the son will be born to her. Now this would be tremendously good news to any woman, and especially to a woman who had not yet brought any children into the world. The angel made it very clear that God wished not only to prepare the boy, but also to prepare the boy's parents. it's a beautiful thing to meditate upon how God purposes in our lives and then move subtly, gently, but nonetheless positively toward the fulfillment of those purposes. About 16 years ago, a young man came to me with a strange request. He wanted me to spend every Sunday afternoon with him, teaching him of the life and the adventures of the Apostle Paul. Now, at that time, I was in seminary and also a seminarian, not as accomplished as Ron McHattie, but attempting to do the same kind of work in a church in

Pittsburgh. And that kept me very busy. And my immediate inclination was to say no. But I thought I'd better ponder the matter. One of the things that I discovered in the course of the next week, trying to find out about the boy, why he had put the request, praying about it, thinking about it, talking with others about it, meditating upon it,

contemplating it, one of the things I discovered was that this boy had learned of me through his father. It seemed that 19 years before that, his father had taken out my tonsils. indirect connection at best with this seminarian in this church and suggested that the boy come and see me. That fact didn't influence me much, but the prayer and the meditation did, so that finally I consented. And for 26 weeks, I spent two and a half hours every afternoon on Sundays teaching this boy the life of Paul and the

adventures of Paul. About a year after that, this boy's older brother joined a Christian athletes group I was sponsoring, and the athletes group met quite regularly in the home of this older brother, where of course the younger brother was also, so my contacts with the boy continued. He then went off to college, had a good academic

career, and decided to go to seminary. It was halfway through seminary that the bad news came that he had Hodgkin's disease. The outlook was very serious for quite some time, and during the period of illness, I visited him. Again, his mind always on the Middle East, always on Paul, especially his journeys and his travels throughout that

part of the world. Well, it was not in the providence of God that this lad should be put down by Hodgkin's disease. That was not according to the plans of the angels. And so this young man came through that disease. Of course, he must always be careful of his health, but he's now basically healthy. He made it through. He

made it through seminary. He decided to go to the mission field, and you'll never guess where the Lutheran Church, his church, decided to send him. They sent him to Jerusalem. He began his ministry there. Two weeks ago, when I was in the East, I sat one evening at dinner with two of the most noted biblical archaeologists in the

world, and they told me that today this young man is considered to be the most knowledgeable Protestant clergyman in the Middle East and Middle Eastern affairs in the world. He is the confidant of popes and of kings. He visits in the Vatican regularly and informs them on Middle Eastern affairs. He is the confidant of

King Hussein and other Arab leaders. He has carried on a tremendous evangelical ministry in that place. A year ago, he came home to Yale University to take a PhD degree, and Yale University said to him, "There's nothing we can teach you. they sent him away without ever taking him to a class. Now, as you think about that boy and his ministry today, think of it like this. Tonsils. Sunday afternoon. A week of listening to the Council of Angels, athletic groups, school, Hodgkin's disease, seminary, missionary designation, Yale University. You see how

God's hand has been moving? And all moving from that week, when we took the time to listen and fellowship with angels. You know, if you're inclined to say to me this morning, "God and I are far apart," I can't argue with you. You know, perhaps you and God are far apart. But if that is so, I say to you with affection but with

concern, it is not God who has moved. Well, as soon as Mrs. Minoa gets this word from the angel, she runs to tell her hubby. Twice it happens. And I think that's a beautiful note in the story. She right away wants to share it all with him. Whenever you have two people who love God and who love each other, there is

always going to be sharing. Not only of the joys and the victories, but also of the dark and the shadowed times as well. It is important, you know, that when this mathematical miracle occurs, God takes one and adds it to one and ends up with one. When he takes a husband and wife and makes them one, this sharing must be part

of all of their lives. And it's this sharing, you see, which unites. It's rather like an eternal triangle. We use that phrase sometimes to refer to two women chasing after one man or two men chasing after one woman. But there's only one eternal triangle, and that's God and a man and a woman. There's a principle in

physics, you know, which says that when two different objects come closer to one other object, they inevitably come closer to each other. So in a marriage, when a husband and wife come closer to God, they come closer to each other. And the fruit of that closeness, you see, is a deep and an intimate sharing. Now, you'll notice

in the story that the woman goes to the man. Well, that's of course because she's the one that saw the angel. But I would point out to you that in sharing, it is most often the woman who goes to the man, because, well, because men have a kind of a hang-up when it comes to sharing. Now, let's face it, fellas, that's true.

There's a remarkable book by a psychiatrist named Sidney Girard called "The Transparent Self." And in this book, he points out what we all know, that the average male lives six years shorter life than the average female. Now, why is that? Well, in most instances, death occurs because of some kind of heart failure or

disease. Well, what promotes heart failure and disease? Usually, it is stress and tension and anxiety. And what releases stress and tension and anxiety? It is the act of sharing. You see, when you keep secrets, you know, when you don't want to burden your wife with those big difficulties or with those decisions, you

just carry them around inside and spare her that, you know. I don't think you really get away with it as often as you think. I mean, you're sitting there in the living room with a face like an old oaken bucket. Any woman can tell something's going on. But when you try to do that, you see, those secrets that you keep, you have

to protect. And as soon as you start protecting something, you must become alert. And as soon as you're alert, you're under tension. And it's tension and stress and what tension and stress produce that affect the heart. We're not only talking about saving families this morning, we're talking about saving

lives. I don't think the truth of this can be argued. The importance of this dyadic effect of a man and a woman sharing their faith in God and their confidence in each other, even here in Southern California, where the divorce rate is higher than anywhere else on the globe, here where we practice serial

polygamy, here where we've turned romance into a kind of routine, here where the divorce rate is more than two out of every four, more than 50 percent, even here the statistics show that when a man and a woman are committed to God and have a sharing relationship with one another, the incidence of divorce drops to the

level of only one out of 15. Father loved God and loved each other, and they shared because of it. And then think about this too. When Manoah got the word, now doesn't that say something to us about the importance of sharing? Look, when was the last time you

and your husband or wife had a date? You had a date every week, just the two of you, no kids. And do you know enough about yourself to share yourself with somebody else? You have to know yourself, you know, before you can begin to share yourself. That's kind of beautiful in the story here. Here's Mrs. Manoah, you know,

out in the field one time, just sitting there. She's not working. She's apart. She's quiet. But it's in those moments that she met the angel. It's in those moments that she discovered God's purpose. It's in those moments of quietness that she came to know herself well enough to be able to share herself with her

husband. Do you do that? Or how about this? Have you learned not to hide things for longer than 24 hours? I mean, I know you can't always spill the beans on the moment. That's too tough for almost all of us. But when you can't spill the beans, have you at least gotten to the place where you can say, "Look, I want to spill

the beans, but I can't spill the beans, but I'm working up to it, and tomorrow I'll be able to do it." Have you gotten there? And have you learned that you'll never really be able to discover everything there is to know about each other and all the beautiful surprises that will be revealed across the years?

I'll bet that when she ran up to Manoah with this message about an angel, he looked at her and said, "Dear, you never cease to amaze me." And it was true, and we ought never to lose that amazement. Samson had many blessings in his life, but no blessing was greater than this. He was born into a home where his mother

and father loved God and loved each other. They shared. Now, of course, as soon as Manoah gets the word, he's all excited, and he asks God to send the angel back again, and the angel comes. And immediately Manoah puts him through a quiz show, you know, name, rank, and serial number. What is your name? Are you the

same angel? And what's the good words? And won't you stay for dinner? He throws that on as well, not recognizing, of course, that he is talking with an angel of God. And the thing that excites me about that is this, the immediate willingness of this man to open himself to this agent of God. He doesn't hold

anything back. There is immediate submission and acquiescence. Now, as soon as I say "submission" or "acquiescence," some people get uptight. You know, "Fight the good fight." That's the way I live my faith. It's not a matter of surrender to God. It's a matter of taking up the banner and marching onward. And if that's

the vocabulary that suits you, fine. I wouldn't quibble with it for a moment. But I would suggest to you at the same time that the real essence of faith is just offering yourself, putting your sword on the ground, running your flag down, and accepting whatever God has for you. has any spiritual sophistication whatever knows, as soon as you open yourself to the purposes of God, watch out, because some of those purposes will be hard to fulfill. They will not be easier. Such an acceptance will make life viewed in toto easier. But individual matters, it is not so. When Jesus knelt there in

Gethsemane and the tide of that blood-red agony rolled over him and he prayed out, "Father, if it be thy will, let this cup pass from me. have looked up at him and said, "Lord, come down from there. There must be another way. You can't suffer so. There's certainly another plan, another alternative that's open." the end bring victory, bring magnificent reward and result. We must learn then to be accepting immediately of the will of God when his purpose is made known never to argue but always to answer, "Aye, aye, sir." Back in the early days of this century, there was an Englishman who built

cranes. He decided instead he'd like to build automobiles. He had a friend who was a driver at that time, and he decided to go into a company with him. So in 1904, they formed a new automobile company. Their goal was to build an automobile that would not break down. Now, you know how cars were back in 1904,

10 or 12 miles and a breakdown. They even had a song they sang all the time, "Get out and get under." Some of you may remember it. In any case, they decided to build a car that wouldn't break down. And to do this, they built what they called the bumping machine. And it was a machine onto which they could place their car,

and it was like driving a car at 60 miles an hour on a railroad track and hitting every tie. So they built their car and they put it on that machine, and then they started to run it. First thing that happened is the back axle broke. Then the frame bent. Then the transmission fell out. One thing after

another fell off the car. But every time something would fall off, they would immediately, at great cost in money and time, develop something new that would endure. And then they would go on to the next problem and the next problem until at the end of their period of preparation, they had prepared an automobile which

they could drive for 250,000 miles without turning it off at 90 miles an hour on this machine, hitting every tie, just as on a railroad track, and not one single thing on the car broke or malfunctioned. who built cranes was Henry Royce, and the driver was Charles Rolls. I've only ridden in a Rolls Royce once, but there's no other automobile like it. we'll open ourselves to the fellowship of the angels, if we'll open ourselves to whatever he would do with us, then we too will become everything that he wants us to be. And that's what Manoah does. question, which is the high point of the whole story. You know how at the end of Verdi's Aida, there's that place in the last scene when the two lovers are dying and the violins soar up and they claim that very high note and they hold it vibrato till your heart is quivering right along with the note. the way the note in this story comes to me at the very end. Because Manoah looks at the angel and he says, "Now, when your words come true, what is to be the boy's manner of life and what is he to do?" this son comes to me, when this daughter comes to me, what is to be its manner of life? What are he or she to do?" That's the question that the church is always trying to prompt. Pre-baptismal classes, the sacrament of baptism, pre-communion classes, the sacrament of Holy Communion, pre-confirmation classes, joining the

church, Christian education classes for young and old alike, all of this is designed to bring parents to the place where they will say, "God, what would you have me do with this tremendous gift you've given me?" Of course, a lot of parents never ask the question. Some are more concerned about formulas than they

are about faith, about diet than they are about devotion. They consult their pediatricians but not their preachers and the results are tragic to behold. Others take the word very seriously. They do go to God for the guidance that God has to offer and they find God's word revealed here. This book, contrary to common

surmise, is a much better book on raising children than anything Dr. Spock ever thought about. Here is the truth that is needed. Now, of course, you have to be careful in using the expressed will of God here with your children. This book was written, you see, across many hundreds of years. It's representative of many

ancient cultures and you have to be sure that what you use out of the book is the eternal teaching of the spirit and not just some cultural reference from long ago. I've known parents, you know, who claim to be rearing their children on the basis of this book and then they go back and pick out little cultural overhangs

and use those overhangs to club their kids right into the earth. This book, don't make any mistake about it, can be used as an instrument of tyranny. If you are going to accept every single solitary sentence contained within this book as giving instruction for the rearing of children, well, then you're obligated to

accept that verse in the 21st chapter of Deuteronomy which says that if a child rebels, he is to be immediately stoned to death. Do you accept that? Or how about in Leviticus 20 where it says that any son or daughter who curses his mother or father is to be executed on the spot. Which one of you is ready to

take up the weapon? Or in Mark 10 where it says that if a boy or girl does evil, he is to be killed. You see, these are implications from long ago in a society beyond which we have advanced. But this does not cloud the fact that the whole witness of this book, the whole testimony of this book, the ongoing moving sweep of

it is what we need to know as we come to our young people. Someone pointed out to me on one occasion that if you really want to understand the great love chapter in 1 Corinthians 13, you have to substitute the word Jesus for the word love. resentful. Jesus is always faithful. Jesus believes all things, hopes all things. Now abide at these three, faith, hope, and Jesus, but the greatest of these is Jesus.
