as it is recorded in the Gospel according to John, the 10th chapter, beginning the reading at the verse numbered 7. So Jesus again said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers,

but the sheep did not heed them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hireling and not a shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.

He flees because he is a hireling and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me, as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep.

And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will heed my voice. So there shall be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life,

that I may take it again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This charge I have received from my Father.

And may the same Spirit who inspired these words incline our hearts to their understanding. Will you pray with me? In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen. The story is supposedly true. It concerns a Texan who left instructions in his will that he should be buried in his Cadillac automobile.

So pursuant to his instructions, a large hole was dug, then he was propped up behind the wheel. A crane lifted the car and the corpse, and started to lower it into the hole.

As it was being lowered, a man standing nearby, one of those who had helped to dig the hole, was now leaning on his shovel. He is reported to have said, "Man, that's really living."

Of course it isn't. Being buried in a Cadillac isn't really living. Indeed, living in a Cadillac may not be really living. What is life?

Different people define it and experience it in different ways. For example, some think of life as something to be clutched and held onto. Perhaps you've seen the aging movie star Marlene Dietrich. They say that she still, although well up into the 70s, looks very young.

And I suppose that if the lights are right, and if you put cheesecloth over the lens of the camera so that all of the wrinkles are screened away, and if you select those whose opinions will be jaded by years,

then you can say that she still looks young. In any case, there's no doubt about the fact that she tries to look young. She was asked recently what she feared most. She replied instantly, "Death."

She's clinging to life. She's clinging to the illusion of youth. She fears the end of life. She clutches at life.

00:05:12.000 - 00:05:27.000

Some people do that. Then there are some people who see life as a continuing, frantic search for security. Linus is sitting, sucking his thumb and clutching his security blanket. Snoopy sneaks up and steals the blanket.

Linus hangs on. The next frames of the cartoon show Linus being dragged over rocks and streams, wrapped around trees and the like, but he manages to hold onto the blanket.

Fast he arrives home, the blanket still in his possession. Lucy sees him all beat up and panting. She says, "What are you doing?" And he replies, "The struggle for security never ceases."

Well, for Linus it doesn't, and for a lot of other people it doesn't. It's not always a blanket. Sometimes it's their work. Sometimes it's their personal fortune.

Sometimes it's their academic degrees. There are different ways in which we gather our security blankets about us. You've all heard of the epitaph, "He was born a man, but he died a banker." There are, you see, different ways in which you can clutch at things,

and some people look at life as that and nothing more than that. Some people say that life has no meaning at all. A man fell asleep on his couch one day, and while he was asleep his son smeared Limburger cheese on his mustache.

00:06:30.000 - 00:06:47.000

He wakened and announced, "This room smells." He went into another room in the house and said, "This room smells." He ran out on the front porch, looked up and down the street, and then announced for the whole neighborhood to hear, "The whole world smells."

Well, there are some who look at life like that. They see it as that which is absurd, that which is out of harmony. One thinks of "Waiting for Godot," in which one character says, "Shall we go?" and the other says, "Yes, let's go," and the stage directions read, "Neither move."

In other words, caught up in something, a reason to go, a reason not to go. The whole thing is futile. The whole thing is without point or purpose, without meaning. Some people see life in very fearful terms. They consider it as that which brings terror and awe.

I remember a good number of years ago flying into the Newark, New Jersey airport, and as we were in the process of coming down, suddenly we leveled out. We stayed at that level for quite some time. It was only later it was announced that during the process of going down,

something had happened to the radio transmitter in the airport. It stopped functioning. Here were all of these planes circling over this very busy airport, out of touch with the ground and utterly out of touch with each other.

And there was panic for quite some time until everything was straightened out again. Well, there are a lot of people who, going through life, feel out of touch with anything that is the ground of life, anything that is foundational, anything that they can depend upon.

And not only that, but they're out of touch with other people also, and they're filled with awe and terror as they go about in circles. And there are others who simply see life as something into which they can lunge and try to wrest from it everything that they can get.

Anatole France said, "His life was one long lust." And if you look at his life, it was an ugly one indeed. But there are people who collect experiences like other people collect stamps. They go about trying to drink deep of every titulation that they can possibly experience or enjoy.

They take into themselves everything, whether it's good or bad, holy or unholy. They take it all, forgetting that life is like mathematics in that there are both minuses and pluses. Some things add to you, some things take away from you. They push themselves into an orgy of activity and call that life.

Twelve hundred years ago, an English ecclesiastic whom we've come to call the Venerable Bede described life in terms of a sparrow that flies into one end of an ancient English meeting house. In the meeting house, a group is gathered about a fire. It's night, it's cold, it's winter.

The bird flies in out of the dark coldness, for but a moment is in the presence of the warmth and the light and of others, and then flies out of the other end of the house into the dark, wintry night once more. The Venerable Bede says life is like that. We come out of darkness, we go into darkness.

We come out of mystery, we go into mystery. We come out of cold, we go into cold. There's just a brief time when, like a little bird flying through warmth and light, we experience light. Well, these people that I've been talking about tonight are like that sparrow.

Some of them want to fly around inside, some of them want to extend the journey, some of them want to build a nest and then a bigger nest and then a bigger nest. Some spend all of their time twittering, some spend their time dodging and swerving at the flames, seeing how close they can be without being burned.

Some try to hide in the shadows. But all of these people are missing what light really is. For light is really Jesus Christ. Jesus himself testifies to this.

"The words that I speak," he says, "are spirit and life." "I," he says, "I am the way, I am the truth, and I am the life." "I," he says, "I am the resurrection and the life." "I," he says, "I am come that ye might have life and have it abundantly."

Jesus, you see, defines life. Now philosophers have spent a lot of time trying to define life, and they've written great tomes in which they've developed their arguments. And when I read those tomes, I find myself agreeing with Jesse Lehrer,

who said that too much philosophy rots the mind. These individuals give themselves to the development of paragraph after paragraph meant to explain life. But it's not convincing, and it's not convincing because they rarely have exemplified within themselves the kind of life that they write about.

We're looking for someone who in his own person, in the very course of his days, says what life is. And this is exactly the way that Jesus defines life. I remember once being in the Luray Caverns down in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and they took us down into one of these caves far underground.

We were led just by a man with a flashlight, and after we went into one room, he extinguished the light. I've never seen such utter darkness. It was palpable. You could feel it. It was like staring at a wall of blackness. It was as if you had no eyes.

It was like the ninth plague. There was nothing that you could see. All you could hear was the beating of your own heart and the murmur of some subterranean water somewhere. And then suddenly, he turned on the lights, and the whole room was ablaze with color. Great stalactites and stalagmites meeting to form limestone pillars that lifted vaulted ceilings.

And the ceilings were covered with tapestries of stone that were red and gold and purple and blue. And in those tapestries, you could see the faces of children and men and marching armies and processions and castles and thrones and crowns and cathedrals. It was all there to be revealed.

For millions of years, God had been fashioning it, but no one saw it until there was light. Jesus is that kind of light in life. It's darkness until suddenly we see him, and when we see him, we see all the color that is there, all the potential that is there, all the possibility is there.

It's suddenly revealed in all of its splendor and its magnificence, and something inside of us responds to that. I can't define this something, but you know what I'm speaking of. You know how down inside of you there is some feeling, some reaching for the light that is evidenced in Jesus that is different from any other relationship or reaching that is yours.

Altogether different. Somehow he has seeped by his Spirit down into the intricacies of our souls, down into the meshes of our mind, but whether we are Christian or not, when we look at him, something inside of us says, "This is life as life ought to be lived."

I just finished reading Sherwood Wirth's new translation of the Confessions of Augustine, and I'm delighted that he chooses as the very first of those paragraphs to be quoted and newly translated, a great paragraph in which Augustine utters what I think is the most sublime sentence he ever wrote, and Wirth does not change the translation from that to which we are accustomed, but I'm glad of that too.

"Thou hast made us for thyself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in thee." That's the restlessness I'm talking about. Paul Tillich picked that same idea up in the third volume of his Systematic Theology when he said, "God is present in those forces that make us restless, those things that move us down inside to reach up to Christ,

knowing that he is the quintessence of what life is to be." If Shakespeare were to walk through that door tonight, we would all applaud. If Abraham Lincoln were to walk through that door tonight, we would all stand in respect and admiration. But if Jesus were to walk through that door tonight, we'd all fall on our knees,

because Jesus defines life at its purest, at its best. Not only that, but he directs life. It has been said, and I'm sure you've heard it before, that it's in the moments of greatest suffering that we are led to our highest thoughts.

It's in those times that we're really up against it that we hurry off to God and think, perhaps, blessed by his Spirit, the greatest thoughts that we ever think, the ultimate thoughts. A few months ago, when I was in the hospital, there came a day which was extremely depressing. I'd been in the hospital about three weeks and was making what everyone said was good progress.

And then, without my knowing it, they discovered in me a very serious post-operative infection. I had understood that I was going to be going home in just two more days, and the doctor came in one afternoon, seated himself in the chair beside my bed, told me about my situation, and announced that I would have to remain in the hospital

for a minimum of an additional 30 days. And that's a very hard blow to take. And I remember after he left, in that moment of depression and despair, hurrying off to God in my prayers.

In the moment of being most down, trying to reach most up, and saying to God, "Where in life is there meaning or sense? I mean, when something like this can happen, what's the point of it all? What's the purpose in it all?" And somehow, through some angel who entered my room without my seeing,

I was led to the conclusion that afternoon, amidst tears and deep, deep groaning of spirit, to understand that the meaning and the purpose in my life have been those moments when I've been able to love some individual enough to bless that person with my loving.

Not the sermons I've preached, not the books I've read, not the degrees that I've accumulated, not the buildings that I've helped to build, not the missionaries that I've helped to send, not the programs that I've instituted, not the legislation I've gotten through or stopped before it got through the General Assembly, none of these things.

But rather, those times when my spirit has touched another spirit, sacrificially and lovingly, those are the moments that seem to me to give life meaning. I was led to think of Jesus in the upper room. You remember how none of the disciples wanted to wash the other disciples' feet.

And then occurs this verse, surely one of the most splendid verses in all of the New Testament. "Jesus, knowing whither he came and whence he was going, girded himself with a towel and washed their feet." Jesus, understanding that he was a child of God, that he was going to God,

knowing this, the pull points of his perfect personality, grasping this, girded himself with a towel, loved sacrificially. Arthur McGill has a little book called "Suffering, a Test of Theological Method," and in that book he points out that Jesus expects us in life not to expand, but to expend.

Not to gather more to ourselves, building bigger and better barns, but rather to spend ourselves in the loving service of others. This is exemplified, of course, in the Good Samaritan, the man who does things for others at whatever cost and expects nothing in return.

You see, Jesus does not propose to us any kind of sacrificial trickery here. We don't walk the second mile because we're going to get some special blessing because of it. We don't give some needy person our cloak because we expect to gain some fringe benefit because of it. Jesus doesn't even promise us that because we love like this, things are going to go better for us.

Quite the contrary, he says that some people will be contemptuous of us when we do this. Some people will ridicule us when we do this. Some people will come down hard on us. Indeed, he suggests, may even kill us when we do this. But Jesus says, "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."

Life, to Jesus, is loving service of others, and that is its own reward. When you lovingly, sacrificially serve another person, you don't get anything else for that except life. But life is the greatest and grandest thing of all. This is what Jesus means when he says that a grain of wheat that falls into the ground will not live unless it dies.

This is what Jesus means when he says if you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it, but if you give your life away, then you will gain it. You won't gain anything else necessarily, but you will gain life, and life is the grandest glory you can have. Jesus says to us, "You must love as I have loved you."

That's sacrificially, that's with service, and if you do this, he says, you will have life, and you will have it abundantly. We all know John 3.16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." We ought also to know 1 John 3.16, where the words of Scripture are these,

"Jesus laid down his life for us, that we may lay down our lives for our brothers." Jesus directs life, and he directs it, he purposes it toward the loving, sacrificial service of others. But he does even more than that. He not only defines it and directs it, he drives it.

He not only gives us a picture of what life is to be in himself, and he not only gives us a purpose for our living, but he also gives us the power to live this way. When a person, for example, accepts Jesus as the guide and example in his life, one of the first things he does is to be altogether dissatisfied with his past,

to never be satisfied with what has gone before. He understands, if he's a disciple of Jesus, that he's always to be reaching out. "Be ye therefore perfect," says Jesus, "as your Father in heaven is perfect." And being perfect means moving on ahead.

One of the students said to me on the week that I came back here to campus, "I guess your grandest wish has been fulfilled." I said, "No, I've yet to wish my grandest wish." There are new wishes ahead.

If someone asks me what the biggest thrill in my life is, I must respond, "I don't know, I haven't had it yet." There are greater things that are still ahead. Alfred North Whitehead said that the greatest dreams of the greatest dreamers are not fulfilled, they are transcendent. When you are in Christ, you see, your hopes continue to amplify.

That's a good word, amplify. When Michelangelo first went into Raphael's studio, Raphael was much younger, just starting out as an artist, and Michelangelo looked at a small drawing of his, very crowded and cramped, and he took a piece of chalk, this master artist of the ages,

and he wrote across the face of that little drawing, "Amplius," which means amplify it, magnify it, make it bigger. And this is what Jesus does for all who are his disciples. He keeps writing across their experience, "Amplius," make it bigger, grander, greater, never satisfied with the past.

And something else that Jesus does, he helps you to understand yourself and also to understand him. You've heard these efficiency experts say that if you really want to get ahead, you ought to make a plan and then work your plan. That's good advice, provided that you build into your plan plenty of opportunity for failure.

I discovered a long time ago, through my Lord, that I am very weak, and if I'm going to make a plan, I've got to include a lot of space in there for failure. If anything can go wrong, it will. I mean, if there's anything I can do wrong, I'll do it.

That's almost invariably and inevitably the case. I'm like that Texan who ran into an airport and said, "Give me a ticket to anywhere because I've got business everywhere." Well, as I look at my life, you see, I've got business everywhere. There's no dimension of my life with which I can be satisfied.

But the glory of belonging to Christ is this. Your dissatisfaction with your own life, the failures which are yours, don't hold you back because you know he forgives them. And because he forgives you, you can forgive yourself.

What a difference that makes. Do you remember how, when he sent out his disciples, he said to them, "If you go into a certain town and your ministry fails there, shake the dust of that place off your sandals and then go on to the next town." You see what that says?

It says that even as Jesus sent out his disciples, he knew they weren't always going to succeed. He knew they were going to be defeated. He knew there were going to be times of failure. And in the face of this, he says, "I will give you a sacrament of failure.

I anticipate you're making mistakes. I anticipate you're blowing it." So when the moment of blowing it comes, here's what you do. Shake off the dust and go on.

And when you know that you've got the kind of Lord who fully anticipates you're making blunders and then blesses you with forgiveness in the midst of them, that gives you power and drive. That's the reason for the Christian in this kind of context. Stumbling blocks become stepping stones.

Your tragedies become the things you build on to experience triumph. Edison ran 500 experiments and every one of them failed. And someone asked him if he was defeated and he said, "No, he discovered 500 things that didn't work." Well, it's like that for the Christian.

He understands out of his failures the very things that help him move on to success. You remember in Plato's Republic, we study here on campus the myth of Ur. Plato believed in reincarnation. And you will recall how a soldier is given the opportunity to witness the process of reincarnation as it occurs.

And there comes a moment in the process when every person, before they're being reborn, is given the opportunity of choosing whatever kind of life they want to have after they're born. And the significant part of the myth to me is this. It is said that all those who have suffered a great deal in their previous life

choose wisely the kind of life they will lead next. But all those who knew luxury and abundance and all the good things, as we describe them, in their first life choose unwisely what they will do in their next life. Those who have suffered learn through their suffering and climb.

Those who have not suffered do not learn and they sink. This is what happens in the Christian experience. Jesus forgives us in our failures and then builds those failures into our experience so that we can climb on them. And when you know that even your failures are going to move you ahead,

that gives you tremendous drive and power. [bell rings] Please turn your cassette to the other side. [silence]

Last fall I was in the Midwest speaking to a lot of Presbyterians and there was a press conference beforehand and those are always very deadly, dull things. But this one was unique because there was one reporter there who really seemed on top of things. And he addressed to me this question.

I've never had a reporter ask this question before. He said, "I see great evidences of religious revival in our time. Who do you think is leading that revival?" And I looked at him. I'm sure it showed on my face.

I said, "Why, Jesus is leading that revival." If there are thousands and tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of young people who are rejecting the value system of their parents and moving into a discipleship which is radical and exciting, it's because Jesus is claiming their hearts.

If there is a new Pentecostal fire sweeping across South America, which is grander than the Reformation which was known in Europe 400 years ago, it's because Jesus is pushing aside the tenets of an ancient church and igniting a whole continent. If the Roman Catholic Church in all of its grandeur and greatness suddenly comes to a moment in Vatican II

when it becomes so reforming and so renewed that the Reformed churches pale in its shadow, that's because Jesus is doing grand and new things within the Church. If five-sixths of the world's population is tired of being hungry and tired of being sick and tired of being subordinated because of the color of their skin

and is rising up against those one-sixth who use God as an excuse for their greed, it's not, as some say, because of a communist conspiracy. It's not because of socialistic influence. It's because the Lord Jesus Christ is sick of people who claim his name,

subordinating other people, and is orchestrating the world's people so that his kingdom and his justice will come. And when you look at the great religious leaders of our time, people like Santides, people like Chavez, people like King,

people like Perkins, people like Camara, when you look at those people, you discover in them what? Never satisfied with the past, always moving ahead, busy, therefore perfect. You discover in them what? Making mistakes, yes, but not being defeated by those mistakes.

Understanding themselves to be forgiven, they climb on their mistakes and are accomplishing new things to the glory of God. We're not to be like sparrows twittering in fright between moments of darkness. We're not to be like people whose lives are lived in some frigid monastic twilight.

We're to be people who are alive with the glory and the life of God. So come with me and stand beside that Cadillac casket at a Texas cemetery. And as the car, with the stiff behind the wheel, are lowered into the earth, hear the man say, "That's really living."

And hear the jury say in the case of the Cadillac casket, "You're dead wrong." For Jesus is worth all the world's Cadillacs, all the gold of India's shores, all the treasures of the eastern seas, all of earth's yet undiscovered ores, all the gems and pearls that will ever be.

Pile them up and add to them the treasures of this planet's Caesars, the crowns of all its sovereigns, the scepters of all its kings and their thrones. And throw on top the silver of the glistening stars, and the gold that flames in little flower faces, and the jewels that fall in spring rain, and the smiles and the beauties of the skies.

And if this is not enough, all that can by anything be given, happiness and earth and paradise and heaven, throw it all into the balance. And it's still unworthy of that one who is life, and who gives it abundantly. Therefore, choose Jesus.

Therefore, choose life. Let us pray. O God, our God, deliver us from the thick of thin things. Hold before us the vision of Jesus, the definition he gives to life,

the direction he gives to life, the dynamism he brings to life. Let Jesus possess us. Let his spirit be before us and behind us and beside us. Take command in us that we might live and live abundantly.
